Relativity and Magnetism in Ni-Pd and Ni-Pt Alloys
We show that the differences in the magnetic properties of Ni-Pd and Ni-Pt alloys arise mainly due to relativity. In particular, we find that the local magnetic moment of Ni increases with the addition of Pd in Ni-Pd while it decreases with the addition of Pt in Ni-Pt, as found experimentally, only if relativity is present. Our analysis is based on the effects of relativity on (i) the spin-pola...
متن کاملHighly processable bulk metallic glass-forming alloys in the Pt–Co–Ni–Cu–P system
Highly processable bulk metallic glass alloys in the Pt–Co–Ni–Cu–P system were discovered. The alloys show low liquidus temperature below 900 K, excellent processability with low critical cooling rate reflecting in maximum casting thicknesses in quartz tubes of up to 20 mm, and a large supercooled liquid region. The Pt57.5Cu14.7Ni5.3P22.5 composition has a liquidus temperature of 795 K, a glass...
متن کاملElectronic structures of clean and sulphur saturated Pt (100) surfaces
2014 Angle-resolved uv photoemission experiments have been performed on clean and S saturated Pt (100) surface, in the photon energy range 10.2-40.8 eV. Empirical energy bands along the 0393X direction of the Brillouin zone are in good agreement with the calculated scheme for Pt given recently by McDonald et al. Adsorption spectra show two extra electronic structures, similar to those generally...
متن کاملHydrogen Electrocatalysis by Carbon Supported Pt and Pt Alloys An In Situ X - Ray Absorption Study
In situ x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) in 1 M HC1O4 was used to examine the electronic and structural effects of hydrogen adsorption on carbon supported Pt (Pt/C) and Pt alloyed with first row transition metals (Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni). In the case of Pt/C, potential excursions from the double layer region (0.54 V vs. RHE) to 0.0 V caused significant changes in the XAS spectra whereas none...
